balón - ball, soccer ball

El balón se pegó el palo y salío. No fue gol.

The soccer ball hit the post and rebounded out. It wasn't a gol.

Normal Spanish

This post wouldn't be in honor of what happened in the Chile-Uruguay game, would it?

Note that phys-ed teachers avoid pelota because it can mean testicle.

TV commentators say balón because they think it would be too tiresome if they only said pelota. Some of them even sometimes say la esférica: the spherical one.

Normal people never say balón.
